"Roots of Life", representing the 1st chakra, reminds us of the basic elements that are needed to support all life. These include the elementals of the earth and the Four Directions - Earth, Air, Fire & Water - as well as all of the very basic forms of life that do not get honored, but are requisite in large numbers to support the existence of all higher life forms like vascular plants, large mammals and humans. We are happiest and we thrive in the Spirit of our lives when our basic needs of food, shelter, health and prosperity are met.

"Spawn & Thrive" represents the second chakra and the flow of creativity, both in the flow of torrent mountain rivers and the quest of salmon at the close of their lives. They return to their origins to create the next generation in the face of incessant flows of current against them, in addition to numerous predators. Creativity is spontaneous expression in the face of a challenge: an opportunity to speak out truth through spiritual and natural inspiration and beauty. It is effort through cyclical processes and concepts of balance. The two fish swim as a pair around the central disk, which shows the balance of opposites - male and female, light and dark, Yin and Yang.

The boundless, ever-expanding, mysterious universe, represented by the dance of spheres motif, is one of extreme harsh conditions of cold, darkness and heat through fusion processes of burning stars. It is a place of raw power. Life systems like those of Earth, bring rise to a different kind of power, one that is refined and rare. One of the gifts of human life is contemplation of our surroundings: one made possible through the miraculous existence of life under temperate conditions. The precious gift of the delicate balance in life processes that has taken billions of years to establish, is the place from which we take our power. The three orbs containing the geese flying inward indicate our role of finding our power in the third chakra.

The heart is truly the center of meditative contemplation, conscious perception and Vision. It is through the loving place of the heart that we learn, expand, thrive and regenerate. At every crossroads in our lives, we need to go back to our source within for renewal, understanding and compassion. The geese are migratory beings and are a seeker's guide, hence my purpose of originally calling this group of paintings the "Flying Geese" series. |

Communication and expression are a means of reaching out to make ourselves known, define who we are and align with our needs and desires. The way we do this, either consciously or unconsciously, defines us outwardly to others and the universe. To be strong, we need to stand up tall through our personal consciousness for what is within us. It is our "soul" way of displaying ourselves and fulfilling our needs and desires. The mountain conifers, like the Ponderosa Pine, do this so eloquently, which is why I have featured them in "Ponderosa Web Of Life," reaching ever upward and outward.

Even though all of our needs and desires of fulfillment can be found within the heart, we often look outside of ourselves in our quests for meaning and enrichment. On the paths of our lives and in the assists of others, we often need to trust our intuition. The outward migrating geese symbolize a venturing into unknown territory and a dependance on navigation guided by an inner voice. No quest should be done in futility without the heart as the main companion. We need to trust that voice within if we are to strengthen it. In times of change, this voice will be needed more and more.

The seventh chakra is the gateway to the divine source and the portal to ourselves as vessels of life force energy. The Pomo tribal peoples of Northern California have been known for their superlative design in basket weaving tradition, using materials like bird feathers in their pieces. In my original design, I give homage to this tradition by representing the red Acorn Woodpecker crests, blue Western Bluebird tufts, yellow feathers of the Goldfinch and the black, bobbing top-knots of the California quail in this lotus-like pattern against a background of fog.

All of my original painting compositions have three things in common: a channeling of Spirit, an honoring of nature and an inspiration from craftsmanship. Most of my pieces to date are inspired by my own antique collection of Western U.S. Native American baskets. This piece, "Prosperity Cloth of the Universe," representing what I call the Overself (Soul, 8th chakra), is thus far the only work inspired by something completely different: An 1870s quilt from Minnesota, the place of my birth and familial origins. It has a double meaning in that feels both like a sheltering, protective covering - like one's Higher Self, as well as the great eternal expanse of the Universe - a source of awe and inspiration. Cosmic, ever-expanding and magical.
